Jo-Ann Shares on her Design Inspiration as an Architect

I strongly believe that buildings should respond to the environment in which they are built.

As an architect living in the beautiful Caribbean, I am inspired by:-
• Nature
• Art
• People
• Vernacular Architecture
• The energy and the rhythm of the Caribbean and its people

The vivid, commanding colours of the sea, sky, flora and fauna are reflected in my designs. I am all about celebrating life through colour. Rich, vivid, amazing colour used tastefully.

Visual arts – paintings, drawings, sculpture, carnival – they all inspire me because they capture the beauty of our country, our culture and the energy and creativity of our people.

Trinidad and Tobago is a multi-ethnic and multi-racial society. There exists in Trinidad and Tobago a variety of: music; dances; forms of dress; foods; religious and spiritual beliefs; and dialects that create one of the richest Caribbean cultures. I enjoy and am inspired by the diversity. As an architect I am able to work with clients from varying backgrounds and reflect their personalities in my architectural designs.

I am inspired by the vernacular architecture that is climatically responsive. I study how the buildings were designed to keep the interiors as cool as possible in a world without air-conditioning. Shading devices and cross ventilation are integrated into my designs.

As an architect I am constantly observing everything around me. In my travels at home and abroad I have an inquisitive mind that is always analysing and trying to figure out just how things work.

The world is full of inspiration!
